2016 is indeed a very productive and fruitful year for my blog. I have discovered many things about professional blogging that really helped me to become more serious about my craft.
I have prayed to God to assure if blogging is His plan for me because I believe that if we pursue something and we failed, it is not the plan of Jesus for us because He has better plans that will not hurt us but will prosper us and make us successful (Jeremiah 29:11).
And I believe after my heart-to-heart talk with God, blogging, info-preneurship and online marketing is the right career for me to choose after I graduate (which is just 3 semesters away including my On the Job Training).
Setting goals for my blog is one of the best things that I have done because having a target for a certain period of time will give me the pressure and at the same time the excitement to achieve those and benefit from the results it will give me.
For me, 2016 is all about LEARNING the ups and downs of online marketing/blogging and now I declare to myself that 2017 will be all about IMPLEMENTING all the lessons that I’ve got from the mistakes I’ve committed last year. Blogging is a fun thing to do but you should know your goals so that you will not be lost in the middle of the journey.
This is a pretty long introduction, Isn’t it? *chuckle*. So before I get this conversation somewhere else, let me share my 2017 goals for my blog/biz.
1 | EARN $700/MONTH THROUGH SELLING WRITING AND VIRTUAL ASSISTANCE SERVICES
As a third-year college student, I don’t want to just rely on the money that my parents give me as a supplement to my daily needs.
Here in the Philippines, students depend on their parents every time they have bills in school or even when they just want to buy smart phones and stuff.
I didn’t grow in a rich family but I am still thankful to the Lord because He gave me such loving and supporting parents. And because of the reason that we’re not rich, I have decided to dive into the online world and seek for an online job that will help me generate my own income.
For the past 2 years, I have been looking for writing jobs in websites that bloggers recommend but I didn’t get a chance to apply to it.
I have found my first writing client just last year and up to now, he is still one of the clients I’ve been working with. But, the pay is still small to completely cover-up my expenses in school and my daily allowance.
So I’m looking forward this year to find more writing clients and be accepted in a VA job that I will certainly enjoy. Also, I’m looking forward for my blog to add some contribution to my income through Affiliate Marketing.
2 | DRIVE CONSISTENT 50,000 PAGEVIEWS/MONTH
This is a very high-end goal I think, but through smart work and perseverance, I can surely do this thing and achieve this by the end of this year.
I’ve put this as one of my 2017 goals because I believe that gaining traffic and catering them with super valuable blog posts will create us a solid and loyal audience and potential customers/clients wherein we can apply our monetization plan and receive our smart-earned money.
I have wanted to achieve this goal for a year now but it seems that I didn’t have enough knowledge on getting it.
I focused on promoting my blog through social media and almost forgot to build-up my blog first as an authority to the people who are searching for answers.
I used almost all social media platforms before just to promote my blog and that’s the biggest mistake that I made because it’s better to focus on just 1-2 platforms wherein you can really focus interacting every single day than putting your hands in 6-8 platforms and growing nothing but stress and pressure all the time.
This year, I will not just focus on promoting on social media platforms. I will push myself this year to get more referral traffic from authority blogs like Melyssa Griffin, Wonderlass, Caitlin Bacher, Shout Me Loud etc. because in this way I can get some of their readers’ attention and potentially create an audience out of them.
But how can you do it, you may ask? Well, I have read a blog post that consistently linking your blog posts to your favorite authority blogs in your niche and emailing them that you’ve linked to them and giving them the link to that blog post can have a big percentage that they will also link some of their related posts to your blog. Isn’t it great to have free referral traffic from blogs that have massive audience?
Also, I will push myself to guest post on 2 blogs per month to build my traffic and my portfolio at the same time. So therefore this year, I can say that I’ll solely focus on getting referral traffic from authority blogs than from social media platforms.
3 | MAKE MY BLOG DESIGN MORE PROFESSIONAL-LOOKING
As you can see, my blog design now looks like a butt *laugh* but I believe that you should focus on the content it gives to your readers (your mom, your brothers and sometimes your dad) *haha*.
Kidding aside, I just migrated my blog from Blogger to WordPress so I still don’t have the budget for me to purchase a Custom WordPress Service which cost big money. That’s why I really need to have a consistent income stream like what I’ve discussed in my Goal #1 above.
Also, I’m thinking if I will purchase a Premade WordPress theme on websites like Etsy, Station Seven, Blu Chic, Studio Press (Genesis Framework). Those sites have a lot of choices but I think that I will have the same design with all their customers.
I want to make my blog design unique and cute but I don’t want it to cover-up the content that I want to showcase on my blog. I adore blog designs of Melyssa Griffin, By Regina, Caitlin Bacher, Krista Rae and Leaving Work Behind.
They have simple blog designs showcasing the features of their blog especially their services and product line-ups. I am thinking of removing the sidebar of my blog so that the readers will be really engaged with the value I’m serving them – content.
4 | ADD SOME LIFESTYLE BLOGGING-RELATED POSTS IN THE CONTENT CALENDAR
I have decided to add this one because I want to show you the real person behind this blog of mine. To tell you the truth, I have a ghost writer that writes all awesome evergreen posts here in my blog.
I hired a ghost writer because I need to cope-up with my college study more but still publish high-quality content on my blog. These lifestyle posts that are still related to my blogging journey will be written by yours truly, I want to make sure that the content I publish here on my blog will still have my touch.
So you better expect stuff that will show my blogging journey achievements and also the failures that I had and I will have on my way to success.
Blogging about topics that can help your readers is a great thing but I think that adding a little bit of YOU in your biz blog can strengthen the relationship you have with your audience. It will not just be blogger and reader relationship, it will be more of that; they will trust you because they know YOU.
After I read a post before about this stuff, I decided to start blending in my personality this 2017. This post will be my number 1 lifestyle post but still related to my niche and biz.
5 | START MY VERY FIRST PODCAST ON YOUTUBE
Having my own podcast is one of my ultimate dreams for my blog and biz because having the opportunity to speak-up and tell your audience how grateful you are to have them is the best thing.
I have decided to start a podcast of my own because I want to up my blogging career; I just don’t want to write, write and promote. I want to be more intimate with my audience. I also thought of starting a YouTube channel but cheesy whiskers! I don’t want other people seeing my face on camera.
Also, I still don’t have a camera that can record high-quality videos for me to upload on my blog’s YouTube channel.
Why upload my podcast on YouTube, you may ask? Well, the said platform is absolutely free (so I’ll definitely grab the opportunity *chuckles*) and I can also add some slides pointing out the lessons I want to teach about blogging and being a boss.
Podcasting really is a great way to market your business to a wider audience plus almost every professional bloggers out there have their podcasts so there’s no reason for me to pull myself from the world of audio and voices.
This career that I chose and the way that God wanted me to pursue is not as easy as 1,2,3. This requires all the hard work that I can give just to make this biz succeed.
It may be hard but I believe that when you really love something, do it. Before, my dream career is to be a lawyer but as time goes by and practicality started to pop-up in my mind, I have decided to take a leap in the digital/online world.
Creating goals like these for your blog will help you know the path that you’ll take because you want to achieve the steps that you want for the success of your career. So what are you waiting for? Start creating goals for your blog while it’s still early, choose to be successful and not a lazy couch-warmer.
